“In! Inde! Independencia!”

So yesterday was the National Day of Catalonia, a holiday commemorating the defeat of the Catalan troops in the War of Spanish Succession on Sept. 11, 1714. There were thousands of people lining the streets, wearing the Catalonian flag and chanting for independence from Spain (“In! Inde! Independencia!”). While there were some police dressed in riot gear, it was a completely peaceful and tranquil day. There was a band in one of the plazas in the center of the city and families with little kids were everywhere. The main event of the day was a human chain of about 500,000 Catalans stretching from the Pyrenees in the north to the border of Valencia in the south, cutting through Barcelona on the way. According to CNN, support for separation has risen lately to about 50% in Catalonia due to the deep recession and cuts in public spending by the Spanish government.
