The Kitchen Diaries

The MACBA sits in the heart of Raval, a huge white building that rears up on you in the midst of a maze of narrow twisting streets. When we go in we are given a code and pointed towards a photo booth. I read the back of the ticket. We are to get our picture taken twice, once at the start and once at the end of our visit, to document the effect that art has had on us. The photo is grainy and blurred when it pops up on the screen, and we are laughing.

The foyer is full of people sprawled out on oversized white beanbags. It is very quiet. Most of them are reading, or looking at their cameras. Some of them are sleeping. The effect is strange, like being in a nursery for adults. The light filters down through white walkways which slant upwards, criss crossing…
